Poker is a card game played by a group of people sitting around a table. Each player has chips that represent money and the goal is to win all the chips at the table in each betting round. The winner is the player with the highest ranked hand when the betting is over. The best hand is often a pair.
During each betting round, players reveal their cards in turn. The first player to reveal their cards is called the active player. The other players may call, raise the bet or fold. Some games use wild cards, such as deuces or one-eyed jacks, while others specify which card is wild (Ace).
The standard pack contains 52 cards with four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. The cards are ranked from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10, with the exception of 2 which is considered both high and low depending on the hand being formed.
A pair is two cards of the same rank, for example two sixes. Three of a kind is 3 matching cards of 1 rank, and a flush is 5 cards that skip around in ranking or sequence but are all from the same suit. A straight is 5 cards of consecutive rank but from different suits, and a full house is three of a kind and a flush. If a player does not have any of these hands, they must fold. Otherwise they will have to share the pot with the player that won it.
