The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that is played by two or more players. The standard 52-card deck, sometimes with one or two jokers, is used. The game can be dealt in rounds with betting and raising allowed. A player may also choose to make an all-in bet, which requires them to put all of their chips into the pot. The dealer of the round is designated by a special chip, and the role rotates after each round of play.

A player’s hidden cards are called their hole or pocket cards. After a betting phase begins, 3 additional cards are dealt face up in the center of the table. These are known as the flop. These cards are community cards that all players can use to build their 5-card hand. If the flop contains a pair of 7’s, a player holding those cards would have the best possible hand at that moment, called the nuts.

After the flop, another betting phase begins. Players can call a bet, raise a bet, or drop (fold). If they call a bet, they must continue to place chips into the pot in equal increments as each player before them in that betting interval. If they raise a bet, the player to their left must either call it or increase it.

If no player calls a bet, the player can check. If they check, they can only win the pot if no one raises during that betting interval.
